Ross Creek Reserve, Dunedin

If you’re keen to take a break from Dunedin’s coastal attractions and immerse yourself in the forest there’s no better spot than Ross Creek Reserve. We’ll show you the best places to visit and give you all the details!

School Creek Falls

The start of the short but steep walk down to School Creek Falls starts across the road from Otago Golf Club (Cannington Road) and is only a 10 minute drive from the city centre.

School Creek Falls is a tall, narrow waterfall with an observation deck in front  — pretty cool to have this so close to the city centre. You can also walk to School Creek Falls from the Burma Road entrance — do this if you have  a stroller or don’t want to walk down and then back up the hill.

Ross Creek Reservoir

An easy walking track takes you around Ross Creek Reservoir. It’s a picturesque spot, with bush surrounding the reservoir in all directions.

This walk is a great one to do with kids as there are lots of trees, birds and people walking their dogs (I assume most kids love trees, birds and dogs as much as ours does!). It only takes 10 – 15 minutes to walk around the reservoir and it’s flat.

Other Tracks

There are a few other tracks in Ross Creek Reserve and you can link them up to create a longer walk. It’s a good place to go for a run or to explore in the further reaches of the reserve — the main reservoir loop definitely gets the most traffic.

The Details

Ross Creek Reserve is located a short drive from downtown Dunedin (near Roslyn / Moari Hill). You can catch the number 3 bus or it’s an easy drive.

The Cannington Road entrance is good if you’re visiting the waterfall. Use the Burma Road entrance if visiting the reservoir, although the walk from Cannington Road to School Creek Falls to the reservoir and back up the hill to your car is a good option if you’re keen to stretch your legs a bit. Stick to the Burma Road entrance if you have a stroller / wheelchair etc. You can also access it from Rockside Road.

I'm a South Island local -- born in Timaru and raised in Dunedin. I left the island in 2006 and returned 10 years later. Having seen a good chunk of the world I realised how special this place is -- the most beautiful island in the world! Seven years (and almost 400 posts) later I'm still helping locals and tourists alike plan their trips around the South Island.
